7th Battalion, Royal Welch Fusiliers

Born on 7 March 1909 in Honiton, Devon, Hugh William Tyler was a Territorial Army officer commissioned into the South Wales Borderers in 1929. He was promoted to captain in 1938, and had served widely before the war including in Japan, Palestine, China, India and Northern Ireland. At the start of the Second World War, he was attached to the headquarters staff of 8th Division.

In Normandy, he served with the 2nd Battalion, Monmouthshire Regiment, and briefly assumed command in August following the appointment of Lieutenant-Colonel W.F.H. Kempster to headquarters staff of the 3rd Infantry Division. He reverted to major following the arrival of the new CO, Lieutenant-Colonel F.H. Brooke.

Later in the North West Europe campaign, Tyler was placed in command of the 7th (Merionethshire and Montgomeryshire) Battalion, Royal Welch Fusiliers following the death of Lieutenant-Colonel G.F.T.B. Dickson on 6 March 1945. His brother, Arthur Catchmay Tyler, earned the Military Cross fighting in Burma and became a brigadier in the postwar army.

Hugh Tyler meanwhile retired from the army in 1950 and was appointed a magistrate for Trellech, Wales four years later. He died on 26 June 1981 in Monmouth, Wales.
