Born on 26 October 1907 in British India, David Russell Morgan was commissioned into the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders in 1928 and was promoted to captain in 1938. He became second-in-command of the 2nd Battalion in December 1942, shortly before his cousin Lieutenant-Colonel J.W. Tweedie was appointed commanding officer. As part of the 15th Scottish Division the battalion went into action in Normandy in June 1944.

A month later, Morgan transferred to 10th Battalion, Highland Light Infantry, succeeding Lieutenant-Colonel J.D.S. Young. For actions on 5 August 1944 supporting the flank of a Gordon Highlanders’ advance, he earned the Military Cross. Later that month, Morgan returned the 2nd Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, succeeding Major J. Kenneth who had been wounded after taking over from Lieutenant-Colonel Tweedie.

Morgan led the battalion during the next eight months of the North West Europe campaign until the end of the war. After much hard fighting in the final months of the war, he received the D.S.O. In June 1945, he was promoted to brigadier of 15th Infantry Brigade, and in the 1950s commanded troops in Berlin. He retired from the army after a posting to the general staff, Scottish Command in 1954. He died in 1968.
