Seeing his commanding officer struck down by a sniper’s bullet, Corporal Frank Schissler rushed to his aid. Finding Beckett dead, he aided other wounded soldiers as the 75th Battalion withdrew to their own lines. Beckett’s body was recovered later that evening and buried on 4 March 1917.

  2. My grandfather, Samuel James Summers from Welland, was wounded twice in the upper right arm and captured by the Germans on the March 1st raid on Hill 145. He spent 2 1/2 years in several German POW camps, and said the Germans treated them very well. He returned to his job at John Deere as foreman of the paint shop, retired in 1946, and died at the age of 84 on October 31, 1965. The Boer War and WW1 did not seem to leave any emotional scars on him, although as kids we were told not to ask him any war questions …. but we did. He was a wonderful grandfather and our family’s hero. Jim Leavens (Beamsville, Ontario, Canada)
